Magma – Final Piece

6 Nov

Here are my final products/ designs created for the Magma Brief. The aim of this brief was to attract more of a student audience to the Magma Bookstore in Manchester (www.magmabooks.com). To do this we were to create a number of products and to advertise them. I decided to go with the theme of the student always being hungover, therefore created products to help them get over their hangovers.

Wall Chart
– The first product I created was a Wall Chart. This would help the student audience keep track of how many hangover and study days they are having across the year. The aim is that you should only have 1 hangover/ treat day per every 2 study/ work days. This chart helps track whether you’re the perfect student or on your way to failure! This is done by using the stickers provided (red and blue).

To advertise the wall chart I created a double page spread which would be displayed in a student magazine. It would be released at the beginning of January and would give the audience a free month of the chart, in hope that the student would want to carry on with it for the whole year. Details on where to buy the full wall chart are displayed on the DPS.

Calendar – My second product was a 3D calendar which would be put together by the user, with the provided nets and instructions. The net in which forms a bed where the calendar is held. The calendar also continues the theme of tracking your hangover/ study days by using stickers, but also provides the user with a weekly hangover tip (and on special occasions such as christmas etc.)

Sticker Book - If running out of stickers for the wall chart or calendar, a sticker pack would be available for the user to buy. This could imply that the user is either treating themselves too much or working too hard! These stickers could be bought for other uses also.

Magma Calendar Packaging and Development

27 Oct

After creating my two-piece net for my calendar with instruction sheets, I realised I would need packaging to hold these and the Hangover Survival Calendar together. I also tried out a new design for my Calendar front page and inside pages which I think looks better than my original designs.

Magma Calendar

27 Oct

Here is my design for the Hangover Survival Calendar (A hangover tip is displayed on important event dates and every weekend on a saturday, as this is usually the day most people are hungover – each page is A7 sized). The bed base comes as a template in which the user will make themselves, the calendar then sits in this bed-shaped base:

Magma Wall Chart

27 Oct

Here is a wall chart I created for the Magma brief. This wall tracks ‘Study/ Work’ and ‘Hangover/ Treat’days; the idea is that for every 2 days of study, you should be rewarded with a hangover/treat day. This wall chart helps track this and sees whether you are the perfect student or on the way to failure! The aim is to have a good work/ social balance. Each month you fill in the amount of study and hangover days that have been taken (which can be indicated by the stickers put on each day) to see how on track you are.

Here is the wall chart. This will be sold as an A3 poster and will also be used as a pull-out double page spread in a magazine. The magazine version will be a more vague version but will display the magma logo and a web address in which they can find the more full version of the poster:

Magma Product Idea Development

26 Oct

The first products I decided to design for my Magma brief were mug designs which warn others of you being hungover, and a tea-towel:

I am now going to work more on the calendar and create a Hangover wall chart. I then need to think about a double page spread and an adshell product announcement.

3D Calendar Mock-Up

22 Oct

I have decided that when creating my calendar, I would like to make a 3D one (like those done by the Curiosity Group). The object I will use for my calendar is a bed, as it is about surviving a hangover. This morning I spent creating a net for my 3D bed, which would be built by the user when buying the product (along with the calendar). Here is a paper mock up of my calendar, there are still a few things that need fixing but here is the general idea… (also the calendar would be a lot thicker, which would make it look like the mattress inside the bed frame)

Magma Product Ideas

19 Oct

On the theme of Hangovers, I thought up these product ideas. I am still unsure which ideas to go with, so any feedback would be appreciated (Sorry the drawings aren’t too clear, had to take the pictures on my Ipod as I didn’t have access to a scanner)

magma product ideas

Idea 1: Calendar – 365 Days Of Hangover Survival – a calendar which displays tips/ myths/ advice on how to survive a hangover for each day of the year. Calendar 1 would be tags (displaying date and tip) on a wire, when the day is over then the tag is removed to reveal the next day and tip. Calender 2 would be in the shape of a bed (made from cardboard and could be flat-packed for user to build), and calendar 3 would be on a board with hanging cards; cards are turned from the left side and put onto the right side each day.

Idea 2: ‘Hangover Self-Help Cards’ and ‘The Do’s And Don’ts Of A Hangover’ cards – humorous novelty cards which include situations you may be found in with a hangover and how to solve them, tips, fun facts and advice on how to cure hangovers.

Idea 3: Aspirin Package – It is said that 2 aspirins and a glass of water before bed and the morning after drinking can get rid of a hangover. So this product would keep those hangover headaches at bay. The packaging shows that you need to take 2 before bed and 2 the morning after.

Idea 4: Ipod Application: ‘The Walk Of Shame’ – a game based on the morning after a drinking session – keep to the path and avoid people/objects – try to walk in a straight line – to steer the hungover suspect, you must tip the ipod from side to side (tip right to go right, tip left to go left) – the game gets harder as it goes on and more points are gained.

Idea 5: Mugs – with warning messages of a hangover to warn family and housemates. Also great for the workplace.

Idea 6: Sick Bag – Fold-up sick bag incase of a public incident when hungover – must be kept in bag at all times.
Idea 7: Sleeping Mask – When housemates walk in, warns them of your hangover and possible grouchy mood.
Idea 8: Mints – to cover hangover breathe, a breathe of fresh air – great for the workplace etc.
Idea 9: Necklace – nice typographic necklace with warning of being hungover
Idea 10: Water Bottle – tap shaped water bottle with label ‘your hangover cure’ – encourages people to drink water when hungover and hydrate them
Idea 11: Stain Remover – stayed at a mates after a night out and not got a change of clothes? – bring a small tube of drink stain remover to make you less noticeable on your walk of shame!
Idea 12: Door Signs – warn housemates of a hangover – 2 sides to the door sign ‘Do Not Disturb – I’m Hungover’ and ‘It’s Safe- I’m Sober’

Magma Ideas – One Big Hangover

14 Oct

After initially thinking of going down the moustache theme for this project (with Movember soon approaching), we soon discussed that this is an area that is already largely covered (with magma already selling a few moustache mugs) so would probably not be the best idea to go with. I then put across my idea of relating Zombies to Students, as they are always hungover/ half asleep. The feedback I got was not to go down the zombie route (this is a big trend at the moment, but how long will this last?); but just to focus on the fact that students are ALWAYS hungover. When designing products I could think about issues such as getting over a hangover and dealing with a hangover in different social situations. My target market for these products would be students (around 18-25 years old), although could relate to other audiences also; we all suffer with those self-inflicted hangovers!
